In the women’s 200-meter breaststroke event at the Paris Olympics on Thursday, American Kate Douglass triumphed against South African Tatjana Smith, the reigning champion.
Douglass, 22, placed just 0.36 seconds ahead of Smith, the silver medallist, at 2:19.24. Bronze went to Tes Schouten of the Netherlands.
In addition to 11 silver and 6 bronze medals, it was the fourth gold medal for American swimmers at the Games. Lilly King, an American veteran athlete competing in her final Olympics, came in last.
Pelham, New York native Douglass won her first gold medal in the Olympics and her second medal overall at the Paris Games after finishing second in the women’s 4×100-meter freestyle event.
Her victory came the day after record-breaking American swimmer Katie Ledecky won gold in the 1,500-meter freestyle, her 12th Olympic medal overall.

Douglass graduated from the University of Virginia, where she was an NCAA champion swimmer, and she had previously won bronze in the 200-meter individual medley in Tokyo.
