A new bill that was signed into law on Thursday permits abortion providers in Arizona to temporarily perform the operation in California, which is adjacent.
The nearly complete abortion ban from 1864 is enforceable in the state, according to a recent ruling by the Arizona Supreme Court, which prompted California Governor Gavin Newsom to adopt the bill, which is effective immediately.
Additionally, through November 30th, the law would permit people to obtain abortions from their Arizona-trained medical professionals in California.
“Arizona Republicans tried to turn back the clock to 1864 to impose a near-total abortion ban across their state. We refuse to stand by and acquiesce to their oppressive and dangerous attacks on women,” Newsom, a Democrat, stated on Thursday.
Arizona’s 1864 law, which forbids rape and incest unless in rare circumstances, is in jeopardy.
The state Supreme Court postponed the implementation of the 15-week abortion ban in Arizona by several months, so as of September 26, the state’s attorney general’s office says it will remain in effect.
In charge of crafting the state’s laws was the California Legislative Women’s Caucus. When the 1864 act goes into force, the new law can give Arizonan women a safe haven for abortions, according to state senator Nancy Skinner, who chairs the committee.

“Our Arizona sisters can come to California to get the health care they need from their own doctors, who they know and rely on,” Skinner stated. “California has made it crystal clear for all those who need or deliver essential reproductive care: We’ve got your back.”
The ban was repealed on May 2 by Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, but it won’t take effect until 90 days after the Legislature’s session concludes, which is probably going to happen in July.
