Grandma Sentenced for Granddaughter’s Murder, Body Dumped in Trash

For killing her 3-year-old granddaughter and abandoning her decaying body in a garbage can for days, a 63-year-old lady likely faces life in prison.

As reported by KOCO-TV In relation to the passing of her granddaughter Riley Nolan, Becky Vreeland entered a no contest plea to first-degree murder charges.

A judge gave her a sentence of 45 years in jail with the chance of release if she completed 85% of her term, or roughly 38 years. The plea agreement included the dismissal of a charge of desecration of a human corpse, according to court records.

A deceased infant was reported to the Oklahoma City Police Department when officers arrived at a residence on Southwest 151st Street on June 21, 2022.

In court filings that KFOR-TV reported, Vreeland stated that she found the child’s body on June 18, 2022, but she didn’t inform anybody for several days “because she was so upset.”

According to reports, she informed authorities that Nolan wasn’t asleep in her bed when she woke up on the morning of June 18, 2022. Although she “advised she had placed toys inside the trash can the night before and she had left the lid open,” she noticed the trash can lid was closed outside.

According to reports, Vreeland saw a ladder beside the container that had not been there before. When Vreeland raised the lid, he “saw Riley’s head was below the toys and Riley’s feet sticking out of the toys.”

Nolan’s siblings reported to police that they noticed a bruise on Nolan’s forehead. The medical examiner concluded that Nolan’s death was caused by blunt force head injuries.

She apparently had further brain injuries in addition to a fractured skull. Her death was determined to be a homicide.
