Following the washing of medical trash ashore on Sunday, swimmers were prohibited from using at least two Delaware beaches and other Delmarva beaches.
Officials from Dewey Beach and Fenwick Island announced their plans via email blasts and social media on Sunday afternoon.
Michael Globetti, a spokesperson for the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, responded that his organization is looking into the matter and “advising beachgoers” when he was asked for details.
“The source of the medical waste is still under investigation, and DNREC continues to monitor the situation closely,” Globetti stated.
Assateague State Park’s ban on swimming, wading, surfing, and other ocean activities was announced by Maryland State Parks in a statement, and Ocean City, Maryland, declared its closure to swimmers on Sunday. A similar declaration was made by the Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland and Virginia.
They only found anything clearly medical in Assateague, including a syringe devoid of a needle, despite signs warning tourists to wear shoes as needles had been discovered on the sand.
