In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced a $4.8 million grant to aid individuals experiencing homelessness in North and South Carolina. This funding, sourced from HUD’s Rapid Unsheltered Survivor Housing (RUSH) program, aims to address urgent housing needs, especially for those left without shelter following the recent storm.
The funds are allocated as follows:
- Charlotte, NC: $1,000,000
- Winston-Salem, NC: $548,000
- Greenville County, SC: $162,699
- Lexington County, SC: $108,780
- State of South Carolina (general): $2,957,704
Adrianne Todman, HUD Agency Head, emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating, “When disaster strikes, people experiencing homelessness need immediate help. HUD is committed to partnering with state and local leaders in South Carolina and North Carolina to deliver lifesaving assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.”
The RUSH program offers comprehensive support for affected individuals, covering essential services such as emergency shelters and rapid re-housing with rental assistance for up to two years. Additional financial support is also available for other critical services. This funding will work alongside the ongoing relief efforts by the American Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
HUD’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development, Marion McFadden, added, “The RUSH program will fill the gaps in federal assistance, specifically reaching people who are most vulnerable in the wake of disasters. HUD remains committed to strengthening our support for disaster-impacted communities moving forward.”
By bringing much-needed resources to those most at risk, HUD’s initiative represents a significant step in helping Carolinians recover and rebuild after Hurricane Helene.
