At a seafood wholesaler in Maryland, a widespread food poisoning episode that left almost 50 people ill has been attributed to an employee’s prepared dinner.
Following allegations that several employees were ill after “eating the same food,” emergency personnel were dispatched to NAFCO Wholesale Seafood Distributors in Jessup at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Monday, according to the Howard County Health Department.
46 employees in all were assessed and sent to hospitals for medical care. Each of them was in a “non-critical” state.
After an inquiry, NAFCO reported that the food illness was linked to food that a worker had made over the weekend at home and then brought to work to share with his coworkers.
“In the hours after the food was served during yesterday’s lunch break, nearly 50 employees displayed symptoms of food poisoning, the majority of whom were treated and released from area hospitals,” the distributor stated.
The Baltimore Banner was informed by two unnamed NAFCO officials that the food in question was “pancit,” a Philippine noodle dish, which all of the impacted employees had consumed approximately three hours before to becoming ill.
According to KGNS News, it is no longer permitted to bring outside food onto the company’s property.
