How to Get a Free Driver’s License in Texas: Eligibility Explained

How to Get a Free Driver’s License in Texas Eligibility Explained

Thanks to a recent exception announced by the Department of Public Safety (DPS), certain drivers in Texas can get their driver’s license for free.

If they meet the conditions, veterans with service-related disability greater than 60% are specifically targeted for this benefit.

Commercial licenses are not covered by this exemption, the DPS explained. It is restricted to personal licenses and Real ID cards that have been granted by the appropriate US government agencies.

You will require appropriate documentation in order to receive a free driver’s license in Texas if you are a veteran with a service-related disability.

Documents Needed to Get a Free Driver’s License

Make sure you have the following before applying for a free driver’s license if you are a veteran with a disability due to your service:

  • Evidence of an honorable military discharge
  • A formal certification that shows the percentage of your disability
  • Documentation from the Department of Veterans Affairs attesting to the compensation received

Procedure for Verification

The Department will print the designation of “veteran” or “disabled veteran” on the front of your driver’s license or identification card once your disability status has been verified.

What You Need to Know:

Distinctive Labels

Candidates for the classification of “disabled veteran” must have a disability rating of 50% or above, or a 40% disability involving the amputation of a lower limb.

With the right preparation and knowledge of the procedure, you may easily get your free Texas driver’s license and proudly show off that you are a veteran.
