Justice Prevails: North Carolina Resident Sentenced for 1994 Indiana Rape

In a 1994 cold rape case, a guy from North Carolina was given a sentence. Following his guilty plea to rape, Robert Daniel Shelton was sentenced to 30 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, according to the Indiana State Police.

Authorities claim that in Owensboro, Kentucky, in December 1994, a 19-year-old lady was abducted.

She was given the instruction to drive to Indiana, where an unidentified male later sexually attacked her. While the culprit drove back, parked the car in Kentucky, and fled, the victim was told to lie on the floorboard inside her automobile.

Investigators used the CODIS index system in 2022 to identify a possible suspect by submitting DNA evidence.

Shelton, 60, of Hickory, North Carolina, received a match back in January 2023. Shelton was also compelled to provide a sample of his DNA for a separate conviction that occurred in Kentucky in 1996.

Shelton was taken into custody and charged with the crime a few weeks later.

Spencer County Prosecutor Megan Bennet stated in an online news release that, “This case exemplifies the proficient investigative abilities of both law enforcement agencies. Without their diligent efforts in collecting DNA evidence, this perpetrator would have never been held accountable for his crime. The courageous victim in this matter finally sees justice after three decades of waiting.”
