The following few days will see the return of King Tides to South Florida. In the Southlake district of Hollywood, certain streets are submerged when king tides occur.
While some water is ponding on Hollywood Beach, many of the streets that typically flood have not flooded.
The situation was similar in Fort Lauderdale’s Las Olas Isles, where there was some water but mainly clear streets. The city has been preventing water from entering through storm drains by constructing back flow valves and raising seawalls.
Through Tuesday, there will be free parking in Fort Lauderdale at the Las Olas Garage and the Riverwalk Center Garage. The parking area of Coral Gables’ Matheson Hammock Park was overtaken by high tide on Monday morning.
Although it’s not too bad today, Edelman, who has lived here for 50 years, admitted that she gets stuck at home sometimes.
“When the tide is high and the street is about 8 inches deep its very difficult to get in and out of the street and sometime you can’t go out at all. You have to wait until the tide subsides,” she stated.

“It’s kind of crazy when it comes in everything starts flooding and it makes it a bit more difficult to get out,” Avery Blasdale stated.
Winds and king tides can make kite surfing, which she does, a little more challenging.
It is anticipated that this king tide cycle would continue all weekend.
