Authorities have revealed that the mother of a baby that passed away in Porter Ranch last month is accused of murder and felony assault.
George Gascón, the district attorney for Los Angeles County, said on Friday that Jalyn Simone Smith-Jermott, 21, had been charged in writing. Eric Shannon Johnson, the 35-year-old father of the child, is also accused of one felony count of child abuse.
The three-month-old was discovered unconscious in his cradle at the couple’s Porter Ranch, Los Angeles, home on September 10. According to Gascón, after being taken to the hospital, he was declared dead.
“My heart goes out to the victim, who suffered unimaginable pain at the hands of those who were meant to provide love, safety, and protection,” Gascón stated. “Children, especially babies, depend on their parents and loved ones for care and nurturing. It is a profound betrayal when that trust is shattered.”
Johnson entered a not guilty plea upon his arraignment on Monday. His next court date is October 17.

The arraignment of Smith-Jermott is set for next Monday. She could get a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison if found guilty.
Gascón promised that the pair would face the harshest legal consequences from his squad. He said, “We owe it to the victim and to all children who deserve to grow up in a loving and safe environment.”
The Los Angeles Police Department is still looking into the case.
