A shooting in Lower Manhattan on Thursday afternoon left two sergeants with the New York City Police Department injured. A suspect was brought into custody, and both are anticipated to be alright.
Police said they were called to the second floor of 91 Canal St. in Chinatown in response to a report of a guy robbing women of their purses while holding guns. According to the police, the site is thought to be a mahjong parlor with potential for gambling.
Victims informed police that the suspect had gone northward along Delancey Street when police got on the site.
A man who matched the suspect’s description was seen by canvassing cops on Eldridge Street, according to police, seven minutes later. The man was stopped by two uniformed sergeants who attempted to take him into jail, but according to the police, he took a loaded gun out of his jeans pocket.
According to the police, the suspect fired one shot during the fight for the gun. The bullet, according to the police, brushed the leg of the second sergeant after striking the first one in the crotch.
“They had him on top of the car, three of them, and then the guy still has his hand down here, so they put him on the top of the car and then I heard the shots, boom boom,” witness Francisco Huayta stated.
According to the police, the suspect fired one shot during the fight for the gun. The bullet, according to the police, brushed the leg of the second sergeant after striking the first one in the crotch.
After that, the suspect was placed under arrest. A loaded semiautomatic handgun with a.45 caliber was found at the site, according to the police.
After receiving treatment at Bellevue Hospital, both sergeants are anticipated to fully recover. When NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban visited the sergeants in the hospital, he reported that they were both awake and in excellent spirits.
“Yet again, your officers confronted a violent criminal who had no problem carrying an illegal gun on our streets, and as a result, two of our officers are in the hospital with gunshot wounds, and they’re lucky to be alive,” Caban stated.
According to Mayor Eric Adams, at no time during the event did the sergeants shoot the guy with their guns.
Sgt. Christopher Leap, a 34-year-old Long Island resident, is the cop who had a minor cut. He has been employed by the NYPD for almost 11 years, according to police, and is a neighborhood coordination sergeant with the Seventh Precinct.
Around 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, Leap was discharged from the hospital. When he and his expectant wife wheeled out of the facility, a throng of NYPD cops met him outside and applauded. He got up to shake hands with the police commissioner and then left for his house.
