DENVER — A man was given 143 years in jail for pointing a gun at a Burger King drive-thru worker who wouldn’t take drugs as payment and then shooting at other people in different places that same night.
The sentence was released by prosecutors on Thursday. They said that the drive-thru crime was the first of many that Eugene Robertson committed in Aurora, a suburb of Denver, on October 17, 2022. It didn’t hurt anyone.
In April, a jury found Robertson guilty of 17 crimes, eight of which were attempts to kill. A lot of the crimes had punishments stacked on top of each other, which made the sentence long. Robertson, 40, was given his sentence on August 9, and the maximum term was more than 400 years.
“We think this 143-year sentence is fair for all the people he scared that night.” The jury knew that the crimes this defendant did were very bad. Eric Ross, a spokesman for 18th Judicial District Attorney John Kellner, said Friday, “We think the judge gave the right sentence.”
Police say that after Robertson pointed the gun at the worker at the drive-thru, he went across the street to a convenience store and pointed the gun at a clerk’s head. Based on Kellner’s office, Robertson fired one shot at the security camera and then left the building. He then fired at two people in the parking lot.
A person who saw Robertson at the convenience store told police that he seemed “off” and that he was “talking about God” while holding a Bible with a purple cover, according to the Aurora Sentinel.
Police say that later that night, a woman who was friends with Robertson called 911 to say that he had shot her because she wouldn’t open the door to her apartment, where she was with other people.
Robertson was seen by police at the woman’s apartment building. Prosecutors say he hid behind some trees before being caught.
