Miami Insurance Agents Under Investigation for Identity Theft Scheme

Two Miami-based insurance agents have been apprehended on serious charges for allegedly stealing their clients’ identities and securing unauthorized life insurance policies, subsequently collecting commissions on these policies.

The suspects, Yanet Hernandez-Suarez, 50, and Alexander Antonio Faneita-Garcia, 59, were taken into custody by investigators from the Florida Department of Financial Services’ Bureau of Insurance Fraud.

According to reports, both individuals were employed as agents for John Hancock Life Insurance. It is alleged that they submitted false life insurance applications to the company with the intention of receiving commissions.

An investigation revealed that on or around June 28, 2021, Hernandez-Suarez used a witness’s name to fabricate a fraudulent insurance application, utilizing elements of their identity for deceitful purposes.

A male victim, interviewed by detectives on July 21, stated under oath that he had no knowledge of any fraudulent activity related to the John Hancock Life Insurance application, which consists of a three-page document.

He affirmed that some of the information provided in the application was incorrect and that he did not authorize his electronic signature on the document. The victim further signed an affidavit confirming the forgery of his signature.

Hernandez-Suarez was identified as the contact agent on the application. Records indicate that she earned $3,249.1 from the fraudulent transaction, which was deposited into her bank account by the insurance company.

Faneita-Garcia, who also worked for John Hancock Life Insurance, came under scrutiny after the company received multiple complaints and conducted proactive investigations into the life insurance policies he had submitted.

Investigators allege that he used the names of six victims to create false life insurance applications between November 2020 and November 2021.

Faneita-Garcia is accused of receiving $10,026.05 in illegitimate commissions. He is now facing numerous charges, including false entry of material fact, identity fraud, grand theft, organized scheme to defraud, and uttering forged instruments.

Hernandez-Suarez, according to jail records, is facing similar charges. Both suspects are presently detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with a total bond set at $15,000 each as of Tuesday.
