Concerned parents took a plane from Kansas City to San Francisco in order to look for their son, who went missing, on the streets of the Tenderloin district. On Sunday, Dorrell King’s parents went on a trek through the downtown streets.
“We came all this way to let him know we miss him and we want him to be safe,” King’s mother, Crystal King, stated.
According to his parents, Dorrell King, 43, battles addiction and homelessness, as reported by KRON on Nexstar. In November 2023, he was first reported missing. The parents were notified by the police that their kid could be located between O’Farrell and Turk streets, which are popular spots for drug use.
“As a father, it hurts, and it’s a very painful thing to know he has sunken to this level,” the father, Dorzell King, stated.
Urban Alchemy, a nearby NGO, assisted in the search for Dorrell. Sometimes, according to Urban Alchemy’s Al Ibarra, he works with homeless people for months at a time before abruptly losing contact with them.
“Sometimes it is bad news, sometimes it is good news — but most of the time … bad news. It’s very unfortunate. All these people, they come from families, and something in their life happened that made them homeless,”  Ibarra stated.

Dorrell’s parents persevered in trying to locate their son in a city located almost 1,500 miles distant from their home.
The interval between seeing Dorrell and watching the news “happened so quick I couldn’t believe it myself,” Smith stated.
When Smith called Dorrell’s name at first, Dorrell was hesitant to speak with him. “I just handed him the phone when I approached him because I was already speaking with his parents on the phone. Smith added, “(He was) extremely astonished that his family was on the phone.
According to Dorrell’s parents, they will support their son in going back to Kansas and becoming clean.
Smith stated that he thinks it is important to give those who are having difficulties a chance to turn their lives around. He said, “There are a lot of people that are on the streets that are struggling and some of them are here because they’re afraid to go home. If your family is looking for you, then there is someone who cares for you, and they can help.”
