Heavy rains caused flash floods in central and eastern Missouri on Tuesday, affecting transportation and making it difficult for some voters to get to their voting station. At least three people were murdered as a result.
The worst of the flash flooding was still occurring when one of the victims, an adult female, drove her car into floodwaters Tuesday morning in the vicinity of Interstate 55 and Bayless Avenue in St. Louis, according to the St. Louis County Police Department. According to police, the cause of death is still under investigation.
The Wright County Clerk’s Office verified in a statement that the two other deaths were poll workers in Wright County, Missouri.
After their car was washed into floodwaters, the victims—a 70-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman—drowned while attempting to swim to dry land, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. Both, who were from the Manes, Missouri, region, were discovered dead at 8:45 a.m. local time.
The unrelenting rain broke records for November rainfall, flooded homes, created rivers in the streets, and prompted extensive closures.
Voters found it challenging to reach a polling station at Brookdale Farms in Eureka due to the impassability of Twin River Road at Highway W, as initially reported by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office shortly before 7 a.m. As an alternate voting venue, deputies have encouraged citizens to head to the Hillsboro Administration Building.
“Voters have yelled at deputies on flash flood assignments suggesting that they are intentionally suppressing votes,” according to the sheriff’s office.
“Nothing could be further from the truth. We are trying to keep everyone updated on road closures so you can go around and vote. Simply ask the deputy for an alternate route if we don’t have it posted.”
