Mother Grieves as Three Sisters Die in Southwest Houston Fire

According to the Houston Fire Department, three sisters perished in a condo fire that broke out early on Sunday morning in southwest Houston.

This incident took place on Albacore Drive, which is close to the Beechnut Drive and Bissonnet Street intersection. According to HFD, they answered the call in four minutes after receiving it at 5:44 a.m.

At the site, newly appointed HFD Chief Thomas Muñoz stated that the fire was limited to a single apartment unit.

Meybis Evelen Zelaya revealed that the three victims were her children, ages eight years old, eleven years old, and fifteen years old, Evelen Del Carmen Melara Zelaya and Julisa Adamari Melara Zelaya.

Oscar, Meybis’s 21-year-old son, was able to escape the fire and tried to return for other people. Meybis reports that he was brought to a nearby hospital and is currently recuperating at home.

The fire did not appear to have injured any firemen.

“I want to say the members of the fire department did an excellent job. They take this personal,” HFD Deputy Chief James Pennington stated. “They treat all these people like it’s family, so they’re grieving just as much.”

Investigators specializing in arson are trying to figure out what started the fire. Meybis thinks the electrical outlet that caused the sofa to catch fire was the source of the fire.
