Some drivers may soon be prohibited from using the New York State Thruway if New York State gets its way. This action is a part of a continuous effort to stop toll-evasion activity.
Following the passage of the 2025 New York budget in April, Governor Hochul announced more funding for improving infrastructure, transportation, and road safety. Making sure that everyone who uses public infrastructure pays their fair part is a major component of our budget.
To address the ongoing problem of toll evasion, a number of proposals have been made:
- Increased Penalties: Repeat fare evaders may now be subject to fines of up to $150. Penalties for willfully covering or defacing license plates can reach $500.
- Enhanced Enforcement: The selling of “ghost plates” and license plate coverings will be prohibited, and toll enforcement operations will increase.
- Plate Covering Surrender: Anyone found guilty of blocking a license plate must turn over any items that cover the plate.
- Revocation of Registration: If a person is frequently found hiding their license plate, the Department of Motor Vehicles has the power to cancel their registration for a period of ninety days.
- Penalties and Judgment: Unpaid tolls will henceforth be handled similarly to unpaid parking infractions, allowing for the registration of judgments against violators as well as the towing and booting of automobiles.
This all-encompassing strategy demonstrates New York State’s resolve to combat toll evasion and uphold equity in the usage of public infrastructure. Drivers will need to be more mindful of their obligations on the road as these regulations go into force.
