Police in Detroit think they have located the firearm that killed an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office detective. That’s from a person with knowledge of the case.

While looking for a stolen car on Saturday, Brad Reckling was shot and died in the course of his duties. On Detroit’s east side, near Park Grove and Schoenherr, he was conducting covert operations.

Detroit police detained three people and established a cordon in the neighborhood that evening.

The possibility of the three suspects being released is something that nobody could have foreseen because there is not much longer to keep them in custody without facing charges.

Are they going to have enough, though?

“I heard the shots right outside my window. I was hoping they wouldn’t shoot through the window,” Resident Edward remarked. “I thought it was young drug dealers shooting at each other.”

Edward heard gunshots, and they were directed toward Reckling, who was pursuing the stolen car out of Madison Heights.

Each of the three imprisoned individuals suspected of killing Reckling has hired an attorney. Police are required to release them if they are not arraigned within 72 hours of their arrest.

“It sickens me. I understand that criminals have rights, but so do victim,” steve Dolunt, a retired Detroit assistant police chief stated. “And we’ve got a pregnant widow with three children.”

Detective killed, leaving wife and kids behind, had a “uncanny ability” to be the greatest at everything.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has not received a warrant request, according to a spokesman.

However, the first indication that obtaining sufficient evidence for a warrant would be a problem appeared Monday afternoon when Detroit police issued a news release requesting assistance from the public.

“There must be some loose ends there,” Dolunt stated. “And now there’s a $5,000 reward out for more information. So while they think these are the prime suspects, they need more to proceed to an arraignment and a preliminary examination, so I’m concerned.”

Unless investigators are able to keep the three suspects on any other crimes, they will have to be released after the 72-hour clock expires on Tuesday night.

“Just pray for the family because if these guys get out, the chances are if they had stolen guns and a stolen car… they’re going to commit another crime,” Dolunt stated.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP, where they will remain anonymous, or the Detroit Homicide Task Force at 313-596-2260.

Moreover, you can provide a tip on DetroitRewards.tv. The tipster will be rewarded $5,000 if their tip advances the case. The case number 2406220359 must be included.
