PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – On the Treasure Coast nearly three years ago, the pull of a trigger was all that was needed to take the life of a young person.
The family of Charles Highlands is hopeful that the new financial prize of $30,000 that is now being offered in return for information would assist the Port St. Lucie police in apprehending the individual who was responsible for their son’s death.
“I just can’t let it keep going,” Pamela Highland, Charles’ mother, said. “I just can’t let it keep going.” “If it were your child, you would do absolutely everything you possibly can to get the person responsible for it locked up because nobody else should have to go through this,” because nobody else should have to go through this.
In August of 2020, Charles was only 18 years old when the police in Port St. Lucie discovered him tragically murdered inside his own Toyota Corolla. This was only a few months after he had graduated from Fort Pierce Central outstanding School with outstanding honors.
According to the police, the authorities have identified a person of interest; however, they do not have sufficient proof or information to make an arrest at this time.
Pam Highlands said, “I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the police have done everything that they possibly could.” “The problem is that word on the street, while interesting, isn’t really enough to convict somebody.”
This coming Thursday, the 4th of May, Charles would have been 21 years old.
Even though Pamela Highlands’ life does not make sense without her son, she has stated that she is doing everything in her power to assist in removing a dangerous person from the community.
She pleaded with everyone in the audience who may have knowledge to share it with the investigator. “All you have to do is act morally.”
According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, which spoke with CBS12 News on Tuesday, the lead investigator in this case has to have face-to-face conversations with those people who may have vital information on this case.
