The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reports that a three-vehicle crash in Robeson County on Thursday night claimed the lives of seven persons.

Around six o’clock at night, troopers were called to Highway 711 in the Pembroke region. All seven casualties were found in a single car and were declared deceased on the spot.

Troopers say that the identities of the driver and the five passengers are still unknown.

Another traveler has been located, but their identity is being kept secret until their family members are informed.

Two cars were driving west on Highway 711 when one of them veered to the left of center to pass the other and sideswiped it, according to the highway patrol. The third vehicle was then struck by the car trying to pass.

Troopers reported that after stopping at the edge of a marsh, the car that was trying to make the pass caught fire.

Out of the seven individuals who died, three were hurled from the car.

Troopers said that the injuries sustained by the third vehicle’s driver, a Pembroke male, were not thought to be life-threatening. He was brought to UNC Health Southeastern by Robeson County EMS.

The sideswiped car fled the scene, and troopers stated the driver has not been named, suggesting the car was not a factor in the collision.

An inquiry is still ongoing on the crash.
