JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — During a hearing on Thursday, the man accused of killing a woman on Jacksonville’s Southside by hitting her with a hammer and then choking her to death pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and messing with evidence.
For the crime, Otis Tucker, who is 35, could spend the rest of his life in prison. The judge will tell him what to do the week of July 31.
The State Attorney’s Office says that on November 1, 2022, Tucker and the victim were in an apartment in the 8000 block of Southside Boulevard that Tucker shared with a neighbor.
Officials say Tucker’s roommate came home to find the door locked and the house totally dark. Tucker let her in in the end.
Officials say that when she went inside, she saw Tucker and blood all over the flat. She tried to call 911, but Tucker is said to have taken her phone, pushed her out of her apartment, and then left through the back door.
After getting several 911 calls, members of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office came to the house, talked to the roommate, and said they could see clear signs of a physical fight going on inside.
Police say that they finally found the dead person inside and saw that they had been hit by something and choked with an electrical cord.
Later that day, Tucker was found with the victim’s backpack and the hammer he used to commit the crime.
After being arrested, Tucker was quizzed. Detectives told him during the conversation that they were going to take samples of his fingernails. He poured soda on his hands when he was told this.
Even though he tried, the DNA of the subject was still found under his fingernails. The case was looked into by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, and Assistant State Attorney Lauren Anderson was in charge of the case.
