A Wall Street Journal reporter, Evan Gershkovich, who was arrested in Russia on charges of spying, has finally met with his lawyers for the first time since his arrest last week.
The editor-in-chief of the newspaper, Emma Tucker, stated that Gershkovich’s health is good, and he is grateful for the support he has received from around the world. Gershkovich’s family is relieved to have contact with him.
The reporter is being kept in Moscow’s Lefortovo prison for two months while an investigation takes place. The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia has accused Gershkovich of attempting to obtain classified information about a Russian arms factory.
The US government is pressing for Gershkovich’s release, and US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, urged his Russian counterpart to release Gershkovich and another imprisoned American, Paul Whelan, immediately.
