Police say a verbal fight went violent Thursday night in the Florida Sun Estates mobile home park, where a man was shot.
Around 9:45 p.m., police from the Tallahassee Police Department went to the trailer park, which used to be called The Meadows. However, friends drove the adult male victim to a McDonald’s parking lot on Pensacola Street, where emergency medical services took him to the hospital.
Police say that the victim had major but not life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is still going on, but no one has been arrested yet.
Before Orlando investor Derek Vickers bought the mobile home park and doubled rents in the fall of 2021, Florida Sun Estates, which used to be called The Meadows, was one of the last places for Leon County residents to find reasonable rent.
In 2021 and early 2022, politicians and non-profits spoke out against Vickers and the way he ran his trailer parks.
The Meadows was the site of a press conference held by city commissioners, and legal aid classes were held by school district officials to help tenants learn about their rights.
Since then, families have been forced to move, and many people who used to live in The Meadows had to leave the county to find cheap housing.
A report from the Tallahassee Democrat says that at least 22 shootings have happened in Tallahassee and Leon County so far this year. Three people have been killed and 15 have been hurt.
