In recent months, a number of lottery players who bought their tickets in Southern California have claimed tens of millions of dollars. Hyo Suk Jang, who won $20 million while playing the SuperLotto Plus jackpot earlier this year, was one of the state’s largest winners.
Jang was recently declared the winner of the drawing held on February 3 by the California Lottery. At Y & Y Market in Historic South-Central Los Angeles, the winning ticket was bought.
Jang wasn’t the only Southern Californian to buy a lottery ticket that would change their life.
Sok Ban Ngeap bought a $2 million winning Powerball ticket at Thirst Quencher Liquor in Burbank. Actually, on Christmas Day 2023, over a year ago, there was a Powerball drawing.
On April 3, Steve Butkus won more than $1.6 million in the Powerball lottery. Butkus bought his ticket from a San Dimas Albertsons supermarket shop. In the drawing held on March 26, Amalia Navarro won $1.05 million with a Mega Millions ticket that was purchased at D & K Liquor in Van Nuys.
For lottery participants in Southern California, there were other profitable games besides lottery drawings. In recent months, three persons who bought scratcher tickets become members of the multimillion club.
Oscar Melendez played a Year of Fortune Scratcher game at a 7-Eleven on Atlantic Avenue in Long Beach and won the $5 million grand prize. A $5 million scratcher that Jose Luis Torres won in Nipomo, San Luis Obispo County, was also acquired.
And Annette Lopez, a frequent player of the California Lottery who has endured enough ridicule for blowing her money on a fantasy, put a stop to her naysayers when she won $1 million on a Power 10’s Scratchers game that she purchased at Save Mart in Merced.
Lopez said to the California Lottery that she purchased the ticket over Mother’s Day weekend on a special shopping day.
“I went to the store to get stuff for Mother’s Day and decided to play,” Lopez stated to the California Lottery. “At first, I wasn’t sure I won. I had to get my glasses. When I looked at it again, I started tripping out. It was the best Mother’s Day.”
Speaking about the money that may change her life, Lopez admitted that she gets upset, especially because she has endured some lighthearted taunts for fun in the past.

“People would always say, ‘I don’t know why you keep playing. You’re not going to win anything,'” Lopez stated.
With $10 spent and $1 million won, Lopez is attempting to contain her gloating toward her critics. Along with the winners’ total prizes, the California Lottery is obligated to reveal the names of the winners and the location of the winning ticket purchase. Additionally, winners must pay federal and state taxes on their gains.
