Subway Lowers Footlong Sub Prices to Compete in Value Menu Showdown

The cost of Subway’s footlong sandwiches is changing.

The fast food business announced on Friday that starting on August 26, all footlongs will cost $6.99, down from a peak of up to $14 in select markets. In an attempt to win back customers who feel that food costs are too high, Subway is joining the bargain menu warfare.

With the code “699FL,” the promotion is only valid for purchases made through the Subway app or website. It expires on September 8. In addition to offering 22 distinct sandwich options, Subway allows patrons to customize their own sandwiches.

The decision comes after other fast food businesses, who have been struggling recently to increase sales and entice customers fearful of inflation into their restaurants and stores, unveiled their special summer menus.

Subway recognized the difficulties Americans have in keeping up with the rising cost of living and their increased sensitivity to food pricing when it announced the new footlong price.

Due to the rise in restaurant costs during the epidemic, more and more customers are choosing to eat at home. According to government data, the cost of eating out has increased by 28% since January 2020, surpassing the 21% rate of inflation during the same period.

This is forcing several restaurants to lower their pricing in an attempt to get customers back inside. For example, McDonald’s offered a $5 value meal for a short period of time in June. For the first time since 2020, the fast food juggernaut’s worldwide sales plummeted in the second quarter.

The management explained the declining foot traffic as a result of low-income customers cutting back on their expenditures on takeout food.

To entice customers who are tight for cash back to the supermarket aisles, other shops, such as Target, have also reduced the pricing of their products. In Target’s case, the decision paid off as its comparable sales increased in the second quarter for the first time in a year.
