Terrifying Accident One Dead and 28 Hospitalized in Theater Disaster

On Friday night, the roof of the Apollo Theater in Belvidere, Illinois, fell in. One person was killed. At least 28 more people were taken to the hospital, and officials say that five of them had serious injuries.

At a press conference, Belvidere Fire Chief Shawn Schadle said that about 260 people, including staff and performers, were inside the venue for a heavy metal concert.

Schadle couldn’t say right away what caused the roof to fall. But he said that at 7:45 p.m. CT, the National Weather Service told officials that a tornado warning was in place. He said that ten minutes later, the roof fell down.

Belvidere Police Chief Shane Woodley said that when officers arrived at the scene of the incident, they found “absolute chaos” inside the building.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said on Twitter that he is “closely following” the situation.

“I’ve talked to officials to find out what’s going on and to direct any resources we can,” he wrote.
