A Detroit court event that killed her daughter as she was waiting for her arraignment has prompted a mother to speak out and seek an investigation.
On September 17, Chelsea Heugel, age 23, attempted suicide while she was being held in the 36th District Court. She was subsequently declared dead at the hospital.
Heugel’s mother, Rebecca Fant, stated, “Obviously, she wasn’t watched in there. Just way too young.” Fant has been grieving the loss of her daughter for the past two weeks and is still trying to figure out how it happened.
“Stubborn girl, very smart. She had three children,” Fant stated. “She was having some struggles, she was going through a domestic violence situation with a guy she was living with for four years and ended up running off and getting involved with the wrong people to escape it.”
Fant claims that her daughter struggled with drug addiction and mental illness. She was charged lately with driving a stolen car and eluding law enforcement, but she was later captured again after disconnecting her tether. She committed suicide while being held at the 36th District Court awaiting an arraignment.

“Those three kids now, because someone didn’t do their job, have to grow up without a mother,” Fant stated. “I have five kids here who don’t have their sister and they don’t understand. Just one person’s job could’ve made that difference.”
