WPBN: After more than 70 years, a seasoned Chico biologist is parting with his collection of 60,000 butterfly species.
According to Sterling Mattoon, 92, he wanted to make sure the butterflies were kept safe. Lepidopterology, the study of butterflies, is his life’s work. Mattoon examined and collected a variety of butterfly species during his career.
He claims that there is a wealth of undiscovered knowledge regarding the ecology of butterflies in his collection. There are over 40,000 unpinned and 16,000 pinned specimens in his collection. His collection of butterflies will soon be moved to a cutting-edge facility.
“I’m so glad to get it there, when we get it there safely through the trucking I will be relieved,” Mattoon stated. “I’ve got lots of things to do yet in my life, but the collection will be where it’s safe and it should be and I’ll be happy.”
Mattoon has maintained a close relationship with the University of Florida throughout his career. The university released his work on butterflies in Western North America.
Bill McGuire, a colleague, established the world’s largest butterfly center, a state-of-the-art center for Lepidoptera. Mattoon’s collection will remain at the center.

Mattoon received special boxes from the university to carry the butterflies. After that, a representative will transport the collection to Sacramento, from whence it will be transported to Florida. At one point, the collection’s preliminary appraisal was valued at $200,000.
As the 21st honorary doctor of science awarded by Chico State in its 137-year existence, Mattoon holds this distinction.
