12-Year-Old Student in Orange County Faces Charges for Attacking Police in School

A 12-year-old student was arrested on Wednesday for assaulting a school resource officer, as reported by the Orlando Police Department.

According to OPD, the incident occurred at Lake Nona Middle School during school hours when the student became verbally aggressive and physically violent towards school staff. The student reportedly struck an officer and took away the officer’s radio microphone used for communication.

Despite several attempts to de-escalate the situation, the police resorted to using pepper spray to bring the student under control. As a precautionary measure, the student was taken to the hospital for medical clearance.

Fortunately, there are no reported injuries to the student, school staff, or the officer.

“The first reaction was, why would somebody spray a 12-year-old child, but then as I learned more about the story, I’m like he could have been in a bad position. You don’t know. Teachers are being hit, attacked by children now. Sometimes you fear what could happen next. I appreciate him not putting his hands on him,” parent Sakina Hardnett stated.

The 12-year-old is facing charges of assaulting a school employee, assaulting a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, disrupting an educational institution, and interfering with an officer’s communication, as reported by the OPD.
