A student was stopped Tuesday morning at a Tallahassee high school because he or she brought a loaded gun to school.
Principal Douglas Cook sent an email to everyone at Rickards High School saying that a student going to the main office after first period was found to have a loaded handgun.
A press statement from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office says that the 17-year-old was late to school and smelled like pot. Then, officials looked in his backpack and found a loaded Glock 43 X firearm.
The student was taken into custody by LCSO and charged with having a gun on school grounds.
A press release from the LCSO says that the gun was reported stolen in Tallahassee, where the school resource officer found it.
The Leon County Schools code of behavior says that students who bring weapons to school will be kicked out.
Cook wrote in his email, “I applaud the quick actions of our professional security staff and our School Resource Officer.”
Since the start of the school year, at least nine weapons have been found on school grounds.
On April 3, police caught a 16-year-old Lincoln High School student for bringing a gun to school. He was charged with having a gun on school grounds and with having a gun when he was a child.
Other Recent Instances of Guns on School Grounds in Leon County
A Leon High School student was caught at the end of February because he brought a loaded Glock 33 handgun and a little more than three ounces of marijuana to school.
A Middle School student at Fairview was nabbed in February for bringing a loaded Smith & Wesson 9mm to school. The kid said he got it from the house of a relative.
In January, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) caught a 17-year-old Leon High School student who was accused of bringing a stolen Glock 48 handgun to school.
In October, a student at Godby High School was arrested for bringing a loaded gun to school.
Early in September, a 9mm handgun and marijuana were found in the backpack of another Godby student who was nabbed. A loaded gun was found in the backpack of a 17-year-old Leon High School student a few days later.
And at the Gene Cox Stadium football game between Lincoln and Godby on a Friday night in late August, a Leon County school security officer arrested a 14-year-old who had a loaded gun in his jacket.
