A woman was fatally shot at the intersection of Canal Street and Exchange Place in downtown New Orleans on Sunday afternoon, as reported by the New Orleans Police Department.
The incident occurred just prior to 3:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve, with the woman discovered lying in the street when officers arrived. She was transported to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The police did not provide additional details regarding the shooting on that Sunday.
This shooting was part of a weekend marked by heightened violence. Another individual lost their life, and six more sustained injuries in various shootings across New Orleans on both Saturday and Sunday.
Among these incidents was a shooting in the French Quarter early Sunday morning, which left three people injured.
NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, in a statement emailed to the media before the Sunday afternoon incident, mentioned that the shootings did not appear to be connected.
“During the holiday season, cities across the country experience an unfortunate uptick in crime,” Kirkpatrick stated. “Our dedicated detectives are aggressively investigating the incidents, gathering information to identify and apprehend those responsible.”
