A woman from Orlando faces charges of child abuse and battery for allegedly striking her 12-year-old daughter in the face. This incident occurred on Collins Avenue in Mid-Beach around 11 p.m. after reports of a disturbance involving a man and a woman were received by the Miami Beach police.
According to the police, the man stepped in when he saw 34-year-old Karen Romero punching her daughter with a closed fist. When he intervened to separate them, Romero turned her aggression towards him, repeatedly striking him in the face. In an attempt to defend himself, the man also punched Romero in the face.
The young girl, with a bloodied mouth, swollen lips, and blood-stained shoes, told law enforcement that she and her mother had been at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel, where her mother had been drinking. Upon returning to their hotel, her mother allegedly assaulted her, using a cell phone as a weapon. Despite her visible injuries, the girl declined medical attention and was placed under the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Romero underwent a medical assessment at Mount Sinai Medical Center before being transferred to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Her bail has been set at $4,000 by a Miami-Dade judge
