Following the revelation of a 2016 video purporting to show Sean “Diddy” Combs assaulting R&B singer Cassie, Howard University is severing its relations with the musician, rescinding an honorary degree granted to him, and canceling a scholarship program named in his honor.
“Mr. Combs’ behavior as captured in a recently released video is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor,” a statement from the university’s Board of Trustees stated.
After publishing the footage of the attack, Combs acknowledged last month that he had physically assaulted Cassie, his ex-girlfriend, in a hotel corridor in 2016. He apologized “truly” and called his conduct “inexcusable” in a social media video statement.
“I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now,” Combs stated.
A lawsuit that Cassie, whose real name is Cassandra Ventura, filed last year sparked a flurry of related lawsuits and open accusations against Combs. The legal dispute was resolved.
