A 47-year-old man named Jarrett Garrett McCabe from Lakeland was arrested on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. This came after a DoorDash food delivery driver reported witnessing an incident where McCabe allegedly assaulted a 16-year-old boy on David Street in Lakeland.
The situation arose when McCabe approached two teenagers, one of whom had previously been in a fight with McCabe’s son. McCabe claimed he had been told by a neighbor that his son was attacked by these two boys on November 6th.
However, upon investigation, it was found that McCabe’s son had been involved in a fight with one of the boys a few weeks prior and with the other boy on Monday. There was no evidence of any recent attacks against his son.
On Tuesday, McCabe decided to intervene and went to the bus stop, expecting a potential confrontation between the two teenagers and his son. When the boys got off the bus, McCabe confronted them. He stated that he slapped one of the boys in the face with an open hand.
However, according to the DoorDash driver who witnessed the altercation, McCabe’s actions were more severe than just a slap. The driver reported that McCabe had punched the 16-year-old boy in the face and followed it up with two punches to the stomach.
The victim in this case was the same teenager who had previously fought with McCabe’s son several weeks ago. The second boy who was with the victim had already made amends with McCabe after the fight on Monday, apologizing for his role in the altercation.
Jarrett McCabe’s criminal record includes prior convictions for 2nd Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Weapon, and Shooting/Throwing a Deadly Missile into a Building or Vehicle. He spent six years and eleven months in a Florida state prison for these previous convictions.
