Several Rue21 stores, including two in the Pittsburgh region, are reopening under new management following the chain’s May bankruptcy filing.
All 540 locations were scheduled to close when the Pittsburgh-based company filed for bankruptcy a third time earlier this year, and the website’s corporation ceased operations.
However, as of right now, the website is announcing a “exciting journey” to “revitalize” the brand, with the reopening of dozens of locations, including the malls in Robinson and Monroeville, first.
“As we kick off this transformation, we appreciate your patience and support,” according to the website. “Our team is dedicated to opening locations throughout the country, and we’re committed to making rue 21 a brand we can all be proud of. Our aim is to enhance your shopping experience with fresh products and superior customer service.”
At its height, Rue21 had 1,200 stores and was a mall mainstay. However, due to its approximately $200 million debt, it had financial difficulties recently.
Although Rue21’s website indicates that new management and ownership are in place, it is unclear who bought the business. Numerous media sources claim that YM Inc., a Canadian company, is the new owner.

The Monroeville Mall location is one of the approximately 40 that are currently open. The website states that about twenty more, including the store at the Robinson Mall, are scheduled to open this month.
The corporation is extending an invitation to past workers to reapply and become part of “this exciting new chapter.” Additionally, the business stated that plans for internet purchasing are “coming soon.”
