Georgia Inmate Kills 24-Year-Old Food Service Worker in Prison Kitchen

Prior to turning the gun on himself, the prisoner shot and killed a 24-year-old employee of the kitchen. At the Smith State Prison in rural southeast Georgia, a fatal shooting took place early on Sunday morning.

In the jail kitchen, Jaydrekus Hart shot the female food service employee at roughly 4:30 in the morning. Aureon Shavea Grace, a worker at the food service business Aramark, was identified as the kitchen staff.

The investigation is being conducted by the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC).

“The weapon is in GDC custody at this time, and a complete and thorough investigation of what led up to this tragic incident will be carried out,” the department stated. “GDC Special Agents are responding and are providing staffing support to the facility.”

Hart had a potential release date of June 2043 and was serving a 20-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter in Carroll County.

How Hart got hold of the weapon remains a mystery. According to a prison official, more information will be given as it becomes available.

“We are heartbroken over the loss of our colleague and our hearts and prayers go out to her family,” Aramark spokesperson Debbie Albert stated. “This is a tragedy for all of us.”

The business was supporting Georgian jail authorities in their inquiry.

Grace was praised by friends and family, who described her as “beautiful to look at” and “kind and pure hearted.”

One coworker commented on an obituary page, “It was a pleasure working with you and getting to know you especially your laughter and we both love to eat. Praying for your family and your babies. U are truly going to be missed.”

Someone said: “Sending prayers and love to the family, especially her kids. She was a really sweet young lady, close friends to my daughter, we’re really gonna miss her. We love you.”

Following the death of a correctional officer in October, this marks Smith State Prison’s second tragic event in less than a year.

The GDC reported at the time that as Robert Clark, a correctional officer, was escorting two offenders from the dining hall, one of the offenders attacked him from behind with a makeshift weapon.

When the other criminal intervened to save Clark, they too were attacked. After being admitted to the hospital for treatment, 42-year-old Clark passed away from his wounds.

“The entire GDC team is mourning the loss of one of our own and we collectively express our deepest condolences to Officer Clark’s family and friends,” Commissioner Tyrone Oliver stated.

“We will support them as they navigate this tragedy over the coming days, weeks and months.”
