Authorities in Indiana state that the victim was shot in the head while filming a TikTok video with a friend, and that three children will grow up without their mother after her ex-husband, the father of her one-year-old son, showed up at an apartment in New Albany, Indiana, and began banging on a window with a gun.
According to a probable cause affidavit, 25-year-old Kaitylnn Lee informed a female acquaintance who observed the gunshot that if she “was ever found dead,” it would be Joshua Thompson who “killed her.”
According to New Albany police, Thompson was subject to a protective order following a domestic abuse incident against Lee in April. The defendant disregarded the order, which stated that he had to find Lee and kill her in a kitchen early on Saturday morning while the children were inside the apartment, according to WDRB. It was said that Lee was lodging with her acquaintance.
Thompson was purportedly standing outside the window when the two were in a TikTok video, “laughing, dancing, and lip-syncing to a song,” just before the shooting. An affidavit outlining the probable cause also described the video evidence, and it stated that Lee asked, “What are you doing here?” before opening fire.
“At one point, they [Kaitlynn and the friend] both stop turn away from the camera’s eye, and ominously look toward the back kitchen window,” the affidavit stated. “A second later, a blast from the area of the window is seen, and Kaitlynn’s head is forced to the right side of her body. Kaitlynn’s body falls from its position and out of view. Smoke can be seen hanging in the room, and the video shuts off.”
At his brother’s prompting, Thompson is said to have dialed 911 after the shooting and confessed to having “shot the mother of his child” after going to the flat to check if the woman was with any other males.
Further details regarding Thompson’s purported confession and their “toxic relationship,” in which they were “always at odds with each other,” were provided in the probable cause affidavit.
“I interviewed Joshua Thompson, who admitted to driving to [Lee’s friend’s] apartment and watching from the outside to see who was there. Joshua admitted he new there was an active no contact order with Kaitlynn as the petitioner,” documents stated. “Joshua told me he wanted to see if Kaitlynn had any other males in the apartment with her.”
According to the affidavit, Joshua clarified that he saw Kaitlynn performing and dancing for the video that she and her buddy were filming. “He said he wasn’t sure if it was Facebook Live or TIK TOK.
According to her obituary, Lee is survived by her mother, siblings, and a large extended family.
Lee was a cheerleader in high school, according to WAVE, but according to her Facebook page, she has recently worked in the area at ResCare Community Living. As recently as August 4, Lee lamented the death of Daylon (whose obituary named Lee as his fiancée) on Facebook, writing that “this year is different and hitting me so hard.”

According to court documents obtained, Thompson is accused of murder, criminal recklessness for firing a gun into a structure, carrying a weapon without authorization, and invasion of privacy for disobeying a protection order intended to stop harassment or domestic abuse.
Records show that on Monday, a judge determined there was probable cause and issued an order for no bond. On September 9, Thompson is scheduled to appear in court again. If he has an attorney, that is unknown.
