Webster City resident Lynne Kannuan finally realized she had won a $1 million Powerball prize, but it took some time for her to get the money.
According to a news release from the Iowa Lottery, Kannuan, 53, bought her winning ticket at the Webster City Fareway shop. It missed the Powerball (12) but matched the first five numbers (29-42-44-51-54) in the drawing held on August 5.
It’s not like she always checks her numbers immediately, she admitted to Iowa Lottery officials. Following news that someone in Webster City had won the $1 million jackpot, she received a message from an Arkansas friend.
“I hadn’t checked my ticket. I had it in my purse,” she stated. “I don’t usually check my tickets until maybe two or three weeks later. I wouldn’t have checked it if she hadn’t told me. She goes, ‘Go check your ticket, it might be you!'”
After speaking with a financial planner and attorney, she picked up the reward on Wednesday at the Iowa Lottery headquarters located in Clive.
“I had to check the numbers twice to make sure,” she said. “And then I got up slowly and walked straight to my boss’s office. And I said, ‘Um …’ And she goes, ‘What? What’s going on, Lynne?’ So I sat down and I said, ‘I think I won the $1 million!'”
Kannuan said that she bought the winning Powerball ticket with proceeds from a winning scratch-off ticket.
She came to the United States as a youngster from Laos, as did her husband Pat. They promised to pay off bills, invest a portion of the money, and share it with family.

Guidelines for Powerball
Powerball is held every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 9:59 p.m. CT. It is played in 45 states as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tickets are $2 each and are available until 8:59 p.m. on the night of the drawing.
Along with a separate Powerball number from 1 to 26, players select five numbers between 1 and 69. To win the jackpot, all six numbers must match.
