Kayaker Reported Missing Results in Arrest After 2-hour Search

CLEARWATER, Fla.- A kayaker from Pinellas Park who was 52 years old was arrested for operating a watercraft while under the influence of alcohol or drugs on Sunday evening after a search and rescue operation that lasted for several hours and took place in the twilight hours of the day.

It is thought that 52-year-old Jason Koehne went missing while kayaking in the general region of Gandy Beach. Volunteers with search and rescue organizations looked for Jason Koehne for a number of hours.

The teams eventually found Koehne paddling his kayak in the direction of his parked vehicle after some time had passed.

The emergency medical technicians noticed that the man, who was 52 years old, had bloodshot, red, and watery eyes in addition to the distinct scent of alcohol emanating from his breath after the man had regained his composure and was declared stable again. His condition was categorized as “extremely impaired.”

He was charged with driving a boat while under the influence of alcohol as a result of his refusal to submit to a breath test requested by the authorities.
