Biggie and Bertha, two pit bulls, had their ears clipped for combat to prevent opponents from biting them. It looks like the ear cropping was a barbaric backyard project.

“They give them whiskey or other alcohol to try and dull the pain, but really it’s awful, bloody, and it’s cruelty to animals,” Sherry Silk, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay stated.

According to Silk, it appears that the owner of the two canines had given them up. It appears that Bertha just gave birth to puppies.

“My guess is she’s had her puppies, and the puppies were sold and that’s probably why they were dumped. We see it all the time, and it’s awful,” Silk stated.

According to her, “dog dumping” is becoming more and more common, maybe as a result of the local economy or the increase in the number of individuals moving into the area and bringing unwanted dogs with them.

Over the weekend, Bertha and Biggie happened to stray into Tampa’s Sligh Middle School. The actual Thaddeus Bullard, better known as WWE pro wrestler Titus O’Neil, was stuffing school backpacks.

Bullard called Silk of the Humane Society, and together he and scores of volunteers became friends with the dogs. She managed to accommodate the two pit bulls. Samantha Petito, Manager of Medical Services, evaluated them.

“Their hearts sound great, but their ears. It looks like they both have ear infections,” she stated.

If you come across a stray animal, you can get in touch with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and bring it home for a week or two, until there’s room at their overcrowded facility.

“If you fall in love, and we hope you will, we’ll even spay or neuter it for free and find that dog a home. The idea is to get dogs out of our shelter, not in our shelter,” Silk stated.

Bertha and Biggie will probably be up for adoption soon. These canines are fortunate to have found their way to the correct location after being abandoned by their owner, despite their clipped ears.
