As Hurricane Debby made landfall in northern Florida as a Category 1 storm on Monday morning, authorities reported the death of a teenage boy in Levy County.
According to representatives with Levy County Emergency Management, the 13-year-old was inside a house near Fanning Springs when the tree crashed on top of it, killing him.
He lived with his grandparents at the time and attended Chiefland/Middle High School; both of them were at home and unharmed, according to sheriff’s officials.
Along with other portions of Florida, Cedar Key, which is also in Levy County, is experiencing significant rain and storm surge due to the hurricane.

Although inhabitants of Cedar Key, who are accustomed to tropical weather, were mainly calm as the hurricane passed by, officials did turn off the water in the community.

One of the residents remarked, “We are pretty resilient. We do this all the time.”
