The English bulldog Reba was abandoned to die last week in a plastic container next to a dumpster on a day when temperatures rose as high as 110 degrees. According to reports, police in Las Vegas, Nevada, have opened an investigation into animal abuse and malnutrition.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department became aware of the case last Thursday after witnesses, according to a local news outlet, heard a “whimpering” dog coming from a taped bag inside the plastic bin and took action to calm the dog down before calling for emergency assistance.
Reba was obviously in serious condition from the beginning—she was dehydrated and suffering from heat stroke—and needed 24-hour care.
The Veterinary Emergency Group is said to have provided this care, and the nonprofit Vegas Pet Rescue Project increased its efforts to find the person responsible by publicizing the case on social media and in the local media.
Reba finally passed away on Saturday due to “sudden cardiac arrest” connected to blot clots from “severe heat stroke and shock,” despite reports late last week that the dog’s condition was improving, according to the Vegas Pet Rescue Project.
“Terrible news to report. Our baby Reba just passed away. She went into sudden cardiac arrest from the DIC blood clotting condition she developed as a result of the severe heat stroke and shock. The only saving grace is that it was sudden and she felt no pain,” the group stated on Saturday. “We did try to revive her for quite some time, but she was gone. She is now over that beautiful rainbow bridge. Perfectly happy and healthy. She stayed with us just long enough so we could get her story out there and to find her abuser and murderer. JUSTICE FOR REBA !!!!”

With money promised to go to “any person who comes forward with the person who is responsible for this evil act” of abandoning Reba to die behind a grocery store along Maryland Parkway, the organization’s reward fund has grown to $21,500 as of Monday afternoon.
According to the statement, “This is an open and ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made at this time. We urge anyone who may have any information regarding this incident to please contact Crime Stoppers of Nevada at 702-385-5555.”
