An autopsy conducted on Monday revealed that Suzanne Morphew, a mother from Colorado who vanished while out for a bike ride in May 2020, was murdered, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation stated in a statement.
The autopsy revealed that the cause of her death was “Homicide by undetermined means in the setting of butorphanol, azaperone, and medetomidine intoxication.”
El Paso County coroner’s postmortem report states, “These drugs are marketed as a compounded injectable chemical immobilizer for wildlife.”
The study states that at the time of her death, there was no sign of any physical harm.
The charges against Suzanne’s husband, Barry Morphew, for her murder were withdrawn in April 2022, shortly before the trial was set to start. Since then, there has been no arrest in this case.
Director of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation Chris Schaefer said in a statement on Monday that “the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and our law enforcement partners understand and appreciate the public interest surrounding this case. The investigative team assembled to work this case continues to follow the evidence and only the evidence as we seek justice for Suzanne’s death.”
In September 2023, when detectives were looking into a separate case, her body was discovered. About ninety minutes south of her Chaffee County home, in Moffat, Colorado, in Saguache County, her remains were discovered.

The Morphew family claimed in a statement from their attorney that, “For the past four years the Morphews have agonized over Suzanne’s disappearance. This included not only the pain of the loss of their wife and mother but also the false accusations and prosecution of Barry Morphew. The Morphews have prayed the authorities would remove their blinders and not only find Suzanne, but find the suspect responsible for her disappearance and murder. However, the Morphews are left with more questions than answers and a lack of justice for Suzanne, the family and the community.”
The autopsy reports that a “weathered bullet” was discovered with her remains in addition to her clothing.
In addition, Barry and the couple’s grown daughters Macy and Mallory claimed that the investigators had withheld information about whether or not they had examined the bullet or the clothing for DNA evidence.
“They’ve got tunnel vision and they looked at one person and they’ve got too much pride to say they’re wrong and look somewhere else,” Morphew stated at the time. “I don’t have anything to worry about. I’ve done nothing wrong.”
