Florida officials have officially accused a mother with killing her 3-year-old twins after months of investigation, although the counts were not sufficient to support possible murder charges.

According to a local NBC Miami station 43-year-old Shirlene N. Alcime is charged with aggravated manslaughter. According to Miami-Dade police, they were called to I-95 on February 2. Just as police were pulling into the area, Alcime allegedly leaped off the freeway wall onto the train lines below.

Milendhet and Milendhere Napoleon-Cadet, age three, were discovered in the rear seat of a neighboring vehicle in the meantime. A short while later, they were declared dead after becoming unresponsive and foaming at the mouth. Their mom made it through.

Although Alcime acknowledged her family’s financial difficulties and that her children couldn’t be left with their father alone because else they would wind up “homeless or sleeping in a car,” she claimed denied giving her children anything to cause their condition. It was purportedly her intention to give the twins “a good day” by taking them to Chuck E. Cheese and McDonald’s on that particular day.

“The defendant admitted to contemplating jumping off the bridge with both victims or throwing them off one by one and then jumping to end their lives,” according to the officers.

Authorities did not immediately file homicide charges because they were still conducting the preliminary investigation, despite having previously raised the prospect of murder charges. For instance, the children’s toxicological examinations had not yet been completed.

Alcime, who was admitted to the hospital following the assault, used a wheelchair to enter the courtroom on Friday. Her previous charge of aggravated child negligence with physical harm had landed her in jail; she has now entered a not guilty plea.
