MIAMI – According to a complaint from the police, a former teacher at a charter school in Miami-Dade County is suspected of sending improper messages to a student who was 10 years old.
Eric Givens, age 29, is accused of committing crimes against pupils while working as a teacher at Theodore R. and Thelma A. Gibson Charter School.
Givens is charged with offenses committed by an authorized person. A magistrate set his bail at $7,500 and instructed him to keep away from the girl he was accused of assaulting.
Administrators of the school said in a statement that was forwarded to CBS News Miami that the suspect had not been seen on the school’s campus in “over a year.”
In a statement released by the school, it was said that “upon learning of a communication that was sent to a student, our administration took immediate action and reported it to law enforcement.”
“The well-being of our students and the security of our school grounds are our highest priorities at all times.” Whenever a rumor or an accusation is brought to our notice, we do not hesitate to take quick action.”
The child allegedly sent a text message to Givens, her former third-grade teacher, on March 3 about pupils who did not pass the class. This is stated in the arrest report.
According to the report, the girl informed the investigators that Givens sent her messages that included things like “Of wow, I wanna see you bad” and “Always wanted to date you.”
The texts were found on the girl’s phone. In addition to this, it is said that he sent her a photo of himself just wearing boxer shorts.
On May 5, the police questioned Givens after taking him into custody.
According to the report, Givens first told investigators that he believed he was messaging the girl’s mother when he was contacting her daughter.
Givens was allegedly seen on many occasions messaging the kid, and the girl herself sent numerous texts in which she identified herself, the police said.
