The only movie theater in downtown West Palm Beach is in a cinema in The Square. This is the same place where two office towers might be built.
The ideas, which have been talked about for a long time, are on the most recent West Palm Beach City Commission agenda.
CityPlace Retail, LLC wants to build two office towers at the northeast corner of South Rosemary Avenue and Hibiscus Street. This is where the old Brio restaurant and AMC movie theater block used to be.
When tickets for the new “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” movie, which opens on May 5, could not be bought in advance on the theater’s website, people started talking online about the theater closing.
We tried to get a statement from AMC, but we didn’t hear back.
Brian Seymour, a business real estate lawyer at the Gunster Law Firm in West Palm Beach, said that The Square has changed over time.
Seymour said that the need for office space is still high because there isn’t much land downtown.
Seymour said, “We’ve seen that people do come to the office.” “People want to go to work, and the fact that more and more people are moving to Florida, especially to Palm Beach County and West Palm Beach, means that we need more office space.”
Stephen Ross, who owns the Miami Dolphins and is worth a billion dollars, is the main force behind the development. He just finished one office building downtown and is now building another one and a big residential building in The Square.
The area first opened in 2000 as a place for entertainment, shopping, and eating. It has also been called City Place and Rosemary Square.
Some people who live and work downtown are sad about the loss of the cinema theater.
Melissa Caruana, who works downtown, said, “I think it’s a loss for the whole square.” “I think it’s nice to have because there’s not much else around here, and it’s fun to go to the shows and dinner afterward.”
The plans, which are still just ideas and haven’t been approved yet, call for an IMAX theater with 455 seats to be added to the office buildings.
