After the Session is Over, Florida Democrats Fight Back

On Sunday, a large demonstration was held in Tampa to voice opposition to a number of the contentious legislations that were enacted into law during the most recent session of the Florida legislature.

Numerous groups have taken a stance against a piece of law that, in their view, makes Floridians’ lives more precarious and restricts their freedoms.

During the most recent parliamentary session, which has just come to a conclusion, there were proposals to outlaw gender-affirming treatment for kids, restrict diversity programs at colleges, and criticize Disney. Democrats in Florida have come forward to vow that they would fight back.

If DeSantis gets his way, the newly passed law restricting abortions performed after the sixth week of pregnancy could only be the first of things to come, according to Democratic State House Representative Dianne Hart.

“You believe that thirty days is too long? The next year, we will be contemplating the number zero! to put an end to the practice of abortion.

You’re going to be thinking about open carry next year; in the meantime, just keep your gun on your hip and don’t worry about it. Because a permit is not required, every single person will have a firearm. You are all aware of what took place the day before.”

A gunman had only one day earlier murdered 8 people and wounded 7 others in Allen, Texas, which prompted President Biden to call for a ban on assault rifles. However, in April of this year, DeSantis signed a bill into law that did away with the need for Floridians to obtain a permit in order to carry a concealed handgun.

Nikki Fried, the chairwoman of the Florida Democratic Party, was detained in April for participating in a protest against a restriction on abortions beyond 6 weeks. She stated that these topics are essential to all individuals.

“These are issues that go beyond partisan politics; however, the Democrats are the ones who are going to fight back and make sure that the people’s voices are heard,”

In April, Sarah Parker and ten others were detained for protesting the abortion restriction. Parker is the president of Women’s Voices of Southwest Florida, and she was one of those arrested.

“We were taken aback when we learned that Senator Book and Nikki Fried had been detained. They were taken aback when he added fuel to the flames of the Democratic Party, something they had not anticipated.

They were caught off guard by the presence of activists, members of Generation Z, and Millennials at that table. And we are putting it into action. We are going to make Ron DeSantis’ life a living hell.

According to the Florida Division of Elections, fewer than half of state-registered Democratic Party members voted in 2022; thus, Parker called on organizers to work toward redefining the state Democratic Party and encouraging increased turnout in the subsequent election.
