According to an arrest complaint, a Texas man allegedly acknowledged to killing two gas station clerks in separate shootings over the course of a 24-hour period in the Dallas region in exchange for lottery tickets for a new apartment.

According to officials, Davonta Mathis, 21, is accused with two charges of capital murder in connection with the murders of Gopi Krishna Dasari, 32, and Muhammad Hussain, 60.

Mathis is suspected of shooting Hussain to death at Jaxx Fuel in Mesquite on Thursday night at approximately 11 p.m., according to a news release from the Mesquite Police Department.

The suspect, wearing a hoodie and bandanna, reportedly shot Hussain, took lottery tickets, and left the scene, according to an affidavit cited by CBS Dallas affiliate WFAA.

Hussain was discovered by police with several gunshot wounds. It happened in a hospital. According to the police, the store’s security footage included specific details about the gunman’s vehicle.

Mathis is charged with Dasari’s death at the Fox Gas Station in Dallas approximately twenty-five hours later, on June 22 at 12:30 a.m. According to a news release from Dallas police, Mathis allegedly entered the store, went up to the counter, and shot Dasari.

A Mesquite police officer on routine patrol saw the car that matched the description of the one seen in security footage at the location of Hussain’s murder within fifty minutes of Dasari’s death, according to the authorities. Mathis was then taken into custody following a pursuit.

According to the affidavit, Mathis allegedly confessed to the killings, stating that he shot Dasari “because they did not have lottery tickets” and Hussain “because he did not want him to run out and call the police.”

According to KDFW, surveillance footage purportedly showed him attempting to pay out his pilfered lottery tickets at a Waco store.

According to online booking records, Mathis is being held at the Dallas County Jail with a $12.5 million bond.

Meanwhile, mourners paid tribute to Dasani, who had just arrived in the country on a work visa. His cousin set up a GoFundMe page stating that he leaves behind a wife and a 1-year-old child in India.
