Shocking! Leon County Schools Superintendent Uncovers Possible Charter Contract Breach by Tallahassee Classical School

The superintendent of Leon County Schools, Rocky Hanna, has written a letter to Tallahassee Classical School (TCS) questioning whether the school has breached its charter contract with the school district.

Hanna expressed concerns that TCS is not complying with Florida law and the minimum requirements of its charter contract, specifically in regards to the composition of its governing board.

According to the charter contract, TCS must have a minimum of five members on its governing board for the direction and management of the school. However, TCS staff members have confirmed that the school currently only has four board members.

The contract states that if a school fails to maintain the minimum number of governing board members for more than 60 days, the sponsor (in this case, LCS) may choose to terminate or not renew the charter.

Hanna has requested that TCS provide evidence within the next five business days to demonstrate compliance with the charter contract and Florida law, including proof of notifying the sponsor of any changes to the governing board, minutes from when a new board member was appointed, and evidence of background checks and fingerprinting for any new board members.

The concerns raised by Hanna come shortly after TCS received national attention for a controversy involving complaints from parents about their 6th graders viewing Michelangelo’s statue of David during art class. The principal resigned as a result of the complaints.
