Tampa Resident Accused of Killing Apartment Maintenance Worker Arrested in West Palm Beach County

TAMPA, Fla. — Richard Lam, age 28, has been taken into custody by investigators with the Tampa Police Department, who have now charged him with the slaying of an adult white guy in his early 50s and the subsequent theft of his vehicle.

A maintenance worker at the Beck Apartments, which are located at 8801 Hidden River Parkway, called the Tampa Police Department in the afternoon of May 1, 2023, to report that he had discovered the body of an adult male who had recently passed away inside a residence at the complex.

Immediately after being dispatched, investigators got to work compiling evidence and exploring leads in the investigation. During the course of the inquiry, surveillance footage was discovered that proved Lam to be in the area of the residence at the time of the murder.

Lam’s fingerprints were the only ones that could be positively recognized from the scene. The inquiry also established that Lam and the victim were familiar with one another and had a prior relationship.

The automobile that belonged to the victim was found on May 2 in the county of West Palm Beach. The Fugitive Apprehension Unit (FAU) of the Tampa Police Department was successful in determining where Lam was hiding out.

FAU officers were able to apprehend and place Lam under arrest on Monday morning as a result of their strong collaboration with partners from the US Marshals Office.

Lam was arrested and charged with first-degree murder as well as grand theft auto. He is being detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Dade County at the present time.
